And Then There Were Six

Hello Kal Lake Swimmers:

The water temperature was 23, the air temperature was 28, the skies were blue and there was a light breeze. So how come such a heavy chop? Six of us ventured through the chop out to the Point yesterday, four rubberized and a fifth with "Happy Pink Feet". Two turned back to the Beach from there, one of them citing the need to "Taper" even though everyone knows that Masters "taper" by drinking less beer. At least Phred had the memo!

The others swam out to the Painted Rocks dodging jumpers in their midst. They took a much wider route on the return leg. Then a hard slog back to the beach through the chop. According to Phred that part was the phunnest.

Everyone looked forward to doing that again or perhaps farther on Sunday at 8:00am as conditions will be warm and sunny.

For those of you who plan to do the black line swimming this winter, most of you should have received a pair of notices from Vernon Recreation, who run our Masters Swim Program. Those of you who were not registered as Masters last year can register for this year's program starting on August 25th (this coming Monday) if you live in Vernon, Coldstream or Areas B or C. If you don't live in one of these areas, you don't pay residential taxes into Vernon Recreation. That means that you have to wait until Sept 5th to register and you will also pay more. If you live in the above areas, you have to verify your residency in person at the Rec Centre. If you don't, they don't care where you live, they'll just take your extra money.

The Pool will be closed from August 25 until September 14 inclusive. Our first practice will be Tuesday evening Sept 16 at 8:15. The schedule will be the same as last year except that there will no longer be a second session on Sundays. That means it will be harder for Robynne and Kylie to pull off their vaunted 3 hour practices!

In the absence of an alternative, we can keep swimming in the lake until the pool opens if we have enough interest. With warm weather predicted for the next two weeks, water temperatures should render wetsuits superfluous for now.

Good Luck to our swimmers doing the Gellatly Bay Swim tomorrow! That includes Gary, Darin and Phred and likely others I don't know about.

Cheers,

Mike
