Hello Kal Lake Swimmers:
While it didn't feel much warmer than last week when we got in, the thermometer read 15.5 degrees this morning at Juniper Beach. This time we had eight of us, two new swimmers (for this year) in Jake and Dave L. They were joined by Cindy and me in wetsuits along with our regular naked swimmers Robynne, Kylie, Sean and Phred. Once we had been in the water for a while the difference became noticeable, although Robynne's description as "toasty" may have been overstating it a bit.
This time everyone ventured around to the Cosens Bay side in spite of the choppy water over there. Cindy, Dave and Jake were content to go to the Painted Rocks, while the rest of us went to Dog Beach Point, Gary's Log, or a bit further. A long way further in Robynne's case as she went all the way to Cosens Beach for a 6.5 km swim. She went on her own as, for some reason, no one else was inclined to join her.
After the slog in Cosens Bay, it was nice to have flatter water in Juniper Bay. This time there were no alarms about unclipping my swim buddy as my hands weren't cold at all. (Last week my fingers had no strength and I thought that I would have to wear the swim buddy and my wetsuit all the way home.)
We will be doing this again next Sunday at 8:00. Hopefully this week's mildish weather will coax the temperature up a bit more by then. As I am away on Friday and Saturday, there won't be any prognostication next Saturday. Nevertheless, it would be great to see our numbers rise in lockstep with the lake temperature.
Unless something strange happens with the lake warming, it looks like we will start our Tuesday and Thursday evening swims on June 16th at 5:30.
Also, for those of you registered for the Across the Lake Swim, we will start running clinics at Gyro Beach in Kelowna at 7:00am every Saturday from June 13 onward. Phred and I and other instructors will sharing our knowledge and experience (for what it's worth). We would love to see several of you there.
Cheers,
Mike
