Hello Kal Lake Swimmers:
On Saturday morning the Lake was filled with over 250 swimmers competing in the third annual ATLS Kalamalka Lake Swim, all of them swimming (somewhat) straight up the centre of the lake to finish at Kal Beach.
Pictured above from left to right are Darin, Gary, Olivia and Phred, who was dancing a little jig cuz he was so happy to be phinished. The competition had three different distances this year, 1.5k, 4.5k, and 10k. Our group was well represented in all three distances. Congrats to:
John and Olivia in the 10k
Darin, Gary, Phred, Jake, and Theo in the 4.5K
Kara, Teri, Lynda, Ashley, Chris, Russ, and Alistair in the 1.5k
My apologies if I missed anyone. And a big thank you to all of the paddlers and volunteers among you who helped make the event a success! The fact that Theo and Gary were both swimming is a testament to the therapeutic effects of swimming in Kalamalka Lake!
While others may have been swimming elsewhere this morning, Gary and Darin were part of the 13 of us who enjoyed perfect conditions in our swim from Juniper Beach. The water was a pleasant 21.5 degrees, significantly warmer than the air. Robynne and Kylie had left much earlier to do a double lap to Cosens Beach. Of the eleven of us who left the beach at 8 o'clock six of us (including Gary) swam out to Gary's log. Even though he's much younger than Gary, Darin's sore muscles told him to join the other swimmers doing much shorter distances. Olivia came down to the beach to say goodbye to the group as she is heading to Calgary tomorrow to got to university. Many of us will miss her positivity regardless of the lake conditions.
It looks like the welcome rain we got on Friday will be it for a while which should make for great conditions on our upcoming swims. As long as the lake temperature holds (and for some of us even if it doesn't) we will be swimming on the same Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday schedule well past Labour Day.
Hope that muscles are sufficiently recovered to see many of you on Tuesday at 5:30pm.
Cheers,
Mike
